AI Search Optimization: A Practical Guide for B2B Companies

What changes when buyers ask an AI instead of searching, what stays the same, and the specific work that improves whether your business appears in generated answers.

AI search optimisation is the work of making your business visible when buyers ask an AI system instead of typing into a search box. For B2B companies this matters more than for most, because B2B buyers research heavily before contacting anyone — and that research is exactly where AI is displacing traditional search.

What is actually different

The answer replaces the results page. Previously a buyer saw ten links and chose. Now they frequently see a synthesised answer naming three or four sources. The rest of the internet does not appear.

Fewer clicks, higher intent. When someone does click through from an AI answer, they arrive better informed and further along. Traffic goes down; quality goes up. Judging AI search by traffic volume alone will mislead you.

The unit of competition is the claim, not the page. Search ranks pages. An AI system assembles an answer from claims found across many sources. You can be quoted without your page ever being visited.

What stays exactly the same

Technical foundations. Crawlability, speed, clean architecture, internal linking, structured data.

This matters because AI systems largely retrieve candidates through conventional search infrastructure. A site that search engines struggle with is a site AI systems never see. AI search optimisation is not an alternative to technical SEO — it depends on it.

The work that moves the needle

1. Answer questions directly

One question per page, answered in the first hundred words, then explained underneath. This is close to the opposite of how most B2B content is written, where the answer arrives after several paragraphs of context-setting.

2. Make claims specific enough to cite

Compare:

“We significantly improved our client’s organic performance.”

“Daily organic clicks went from 7 to 465 over six months — 42,182 clicks and 3.1 million impressions, verified in Google Search Console.”

Only the second is quotable. Vague claims are unusable regardless of whether they are true.

3. Publish information that exists nowhere else

The highest-leverage item on this list. Models have no reason to cite a restatement of common knowledge, and every reason to cite the only available source for a specific fact.

For most B2B companies this is more achievable than it sounds. You have operational data, pricing knowledge, market observations and outcomes that nobody else can publish. The barrier is usually willingness, not capability.

4. Fix your entity

AI systems need to know who you are and tell you apart from similarly named companies. Consistent naming across the web, complete structured data, profiles on the platforms that matter, and — critically — being described the same way by third parties.

We found this the hard way. Our own baseline showed one major engine unable to distinguish us from five unrelated businesses sharing part of our name. Content volume would not have fixed it.

5. Put real names on the work

Named authors with verifiable credentials and genuine experience. Anonymous corporate content carries no authority signal, and authority is precisely what a model is assessing when it decides whether to trust a source.

6. Measure with prompts, not dashboards

There is no analytics platform for AI citations. The workable method:

What to expect

Faster than traditional SEO in uncontested topics. If you publish genuinely original information where few authoritative sources exist, citations can appear within weeks — there is simply less competition for the model to prefer.

Slower in crowded categories, where it depends on building corroboration across the wider web.

And nothing is guaranteed. Model behaviour changes, outputs vary between sessions, and no vendor controls the outcome. Improve the signals, measure honestly, publish things worth citing.
