What Is Generative Engine Optimization? A Plain Definition

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the practice of making your business discoverable, understandable and citable by AI answer engines. What it means, how it works, and what it cannot promise.

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the practice of improving the likelihood that your business or content is discovered, understood, referenced and cited by AI-powered answer engines — systems like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google’s AI Overviews.

It extends traditional search optimisation. The objective is no longer only to rank in a list of links. It is to become a source those systems trust and reference when generating an answer.

Why it exists

For twenty years, search worked one way: type a question, get a list of links, choose one.

That is changing. A growing share of searches now return a generated answer above the results, assembled from a handful of sources the system considers reliable. The answer often satisfies the question entirely.

If your business is not among those sources, you are invisible to that searcher — regardless of where you rank organically. GEO is the discipline that developed in response.

What GEO actually involves

Making content extractable. Direct answers, clear structure, one idea per section. If the answer to a question is buried mid-paragraph under a story, it is harder to lift than a competitor’s clean statement.

Being specific. Vague claims cannot be cited. Concrete facts with numbers, dates and verifiable detail can.

Publishing original information. The strongest citation driver by a wide margin. If your content restates what is already available, an AI system has no reason to prefer it. If you hold data that exists nowhere else, it has a specific reason to reference you.

Establishing authority. Named authors with real credentials, consistent entity information, corroborating mentions elsewhere on the web.

Keeping technical foundations sound. Crawlability, speed, structured data. Most AI systems find content through the same index as search engines, so a technically broken site fails in both.

What GEO cannot promise

No credible practitioner can guarantee an AI citation. Models do not publish ranking rules, responses vary between users and sessions, and behaviour changes as models are updated.

Anyone promising guaranteed placement in ChatGPT is describing something outside their control.

What is achievable: systematically improving every signal known to influence citation, measuring how answers change over time, and publishing material genuinely worth referencing.

Where most businesses should start

Measure first. Ask the AI engines the questions that matter in your market, record who gets named, and keep the wording identical for future comparison. Almost nobody does this, which means almost nobody knows whether their GEO work is doing anything.

Then fix the biggest structural gap. Very often it is not content at all. When we ran this on our own domain, the binding constraint turned out to be entity confusion — one engine could not distinguish our company from five unrelated businesses with similar names. No amount of publishing fixes that. It needed consistent naming, profiles and structured data.

Then publish something original. Not a summary of other people’s ideas. Something only you can write, because only you have the data.
