Do I need WhatsApp Business API to run a WhatsApp AI chatbot?
Yes — for any production AI deployment. The free WhatsApp Business App is single-device and has no API. AI chatbots require the WhatsApp Business Platform (also called WhatsApp Business API or WABA), which is multi-agent, multi-device, and supports automation. How is this different from Meta AI inside WhatsApp?
Meta AI is a consumer assistant Meta places in personal WhatsApp accounts. It does not answer for your business and you cannot configure it. A WhatsApp AI chatbot is a separate, business-owned AI agent that runs on a business number you control — answering your customers, on your data, with your guardrails, integrated to your CRM. They are not substitutes.
